A fun thing to plant because they germinate easily and grow to maturity super quickly: as little as three weeks for some cultivars. Someday I'll pickle some of them.


Work compost or manure into the seed-bed before sowing. Sow as soon as the soil is workable in the spring and as long as it is reasonably cool (they get bitter in the heat). Row covers can prevent insect damage to leaves. Expect around 5-6 days for germination.
